An urban design solution to make unlit stairways safer

A lighting system for marking hazardous stairways

In September 2025, five staircases located in public spaces in Belgrade, near the AutoKomanda neighborhood and the Frans restaurant, were made safer through the application of LuminoKrom® photoluminescent paint. These unlit and potentially hazardous areas were marked with a special coating 50 cm wide on each side of the staircases, covering both the treads and risers. This system clearly highlights the pathways and changes in elevation, thereby improving the visibility of the infrastructure for all users, even at night.

An effective solution for preventing falls in urban areas

This project perfectly illustrates the value of LuminoKrom® in making high-risk pedestrian pathways safer, particularly in areas without street lighting. By making the edges of steps and changes in elevation visible as soon as night falls, the photoluminescent paint directly helps prevent falls and reduce accidents. It thus offers a concrete solution to urban safety challenges, particularly for the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or occasional users.

Beyond improving safety, this solution also offers significant energy-saving benefits. Operating without an electrical power supply, LuminoKrom® captures natural or artificial light during the day and emits it in the dark, thereby eliminating the need to install or maintain dedicated lighting. This approach combines efficiency, sustainability, and cost control. Led by the Belgrade City Transport Secretariat, with support from GIZ and distribution provided by BBA International, this project demonstrates LuminoKrom®’s ability to integrate into ambitious urban initiatives, combining innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility.
