Photoluminescence - Technological innovation at the service of road marking
LuminoKrom® luminescent paint contributes to the emergence of tomorrow’s infrastructures which must be safer, more economical and more eco-responsible. This innovation has been labeled by the “Route du Futur” program of ADEME
LuminoKrom® marking exploits the natural phenomenon of photoluminescence. This physical process allows the paint to recharge indefinitely in daylight or artificial lighting without any fatigue.
LuminoKrom® innovation lies in having developed photoluminescent markings that are very resistant outdoors and capable of storing the surrounding light to emit a diffuse luminosity at night, visible for more than 10 hours. This patented innovation was developed within the R&D department of OliKrom. Several years of research and collaboration with the Eiffage Group were necessary to obtain a paint conforming to road use, combining coverage, colorimetry and chemical stability with optimal luminous performance in terms of intensity and duration.
Testimony, from innovation to use
Luminescence has been proven for a long time indoors (for stickers in children’s rooms, for example), but “until summer 2018, we had never been able to use it outdoors because luminescence cannot could not resist external aggressions such as rain and ultraviolet rays ”, Hervé Dumont, technical director of Eiffage Route. An attempted road application in the Netherlands a few years ago was even unsuccessful, with the paint showing signs of mold in just a few weeks.
Now, the LuminoKrom® innovation has put luminescence at the service of mobility security. The stake is important to increase road safety because “a reflective paint has a range of 30 to 40 meters (the range of the headlights that it reflects) while the luminescent signage LuminoKrom® makes it possible to reach 80 to 100 meters“, underlines Hervé Dumont. “Since the summer of 2018, we have applied LuminoKrom® luminescent paint for markings on the ground on a national road (RN2) going from Paris to Soissons. The technology is perfectly resistant to climatic conditions and road traffic. “
LuminoKrom, a photoluminescence of + 10 hours
LuminoKrom, is the first photoluminescent road paint on the market capable of illuminating for 10 hours at night (Class G, ISO 17398 standard).
Be careful ! There are many so-called “phosphorescent” and / or “photoluminescent” products on the market with a luminescence duration of 2 to 3 hours (class B / C). Maintaining brightness over +10 hours is essential in the road sector to ensure good visibility throughout the night.
LuminoKrom® benefits from unique expertise in photophysics. It is the only photoluminescent paint on the market that is patented with luminescence performance of +10 hours! Several years of research were necessary. Our expertise in photophysics has enabled us to optimize the photochemical cascade, in particular by limiting all non-radiative deactivation processes.
